SPEED DATING: Coach Nelson![]() SPEED DATING: Meet the Barnstormers Welcome back to SPEED DATING, where we give you a crash course introduction to each member of the 2017 Iowa Barnstormers roster! Today we’re going to introduce you to Barnstormers Defensive Line Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Malcolm Nelson. Coach Nelson joins the Iowa Barnstormers with over 15 years of combined coaching experience in high school, college, and indoor football. While coaching at Livingstone College, Coach Nelson earned the opportunity to coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers as part of the Bill Walsh Coaching Fellowship in 2011, where he gained experience as a special teams coach. We asked Coach Nelson a few quick questions to get to know him better, check it out below: Favorite Food: Baked Chicken and Dressing Favorite Movie: Any Given Sunday, specifically the “Inches” speech Favorite TV Show: The Walking Dead Favorite Actor: Denzel Washington Favorite Music Artist: Dave Koz Favorite NFL Team: Pittsburgh Steelers Favorite Color: Blue What are you most looking forward to in coming to Des Moines? “Im looking forward to learning about Des Moines and its history.” Other than football, what is your favorite sport to watch? “Favorite outside of football is basketball, men and women.” What is one thing that is on your bucket list? “To visit all 50 states, I’ve visited quite a bit so far.” Who is someone who inspires you? Why? “I’m inspired by my parents because they instilled in me a work ethic and to always work smart and hard regardless of the result.” What is your favorite thing about coaching football? “My favorite thing about coaching is the satisfaction of being part of a team that has a goal of winning the championship.” Where is one place you’ve always wanted to visit, but haven’t? “I’d like to visit the burial place of Jesus Christ.” What would you say is your greatest achievement in life thus far? “My greatest life achievement is being chosen to coach and learn with the Pittsburgh Steelers.” What is your goal going into the 2017 season? “I expect to be part of the first team in Iowa Barnstormers history to win the IFL championship.” What are you most excited about in joining the Barnstormers organization? “I’m most excited about seeing a full sold out game of Iowa Barnstormers fans all the way to winning the IFL championship.” What is something you want the fans to know about you? “I read music and play the piano when I have time, I learned to play when I was 5 years old.” The Iowa Barnstormers home opener is scheduled for Sunday, March 26, 2017 against in-state rivals the Cedar Rapids Titans.
