Iowa Barnstormers Take Down Nebraska Danger
DES MOINES, IA- The Iowa Barnstormers (4-5) defeated the Nebraska Danger (5-5) Friday night at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Nebraska, 37-30.
The Iowa Barnstormers took their top ranked offense to Grand Island, Nebraska this week as they took on the Danger. Despite a matchup of two of the top offenses in the league the defenses were in control in the first quarter. The only score of the first quarter came with under five minutes remaining as Nebraska receiver O.J. Simpson took a pass 40 yards for the score, 7-0.
The second quarter saw the Barnstormer offense flexing their muscles. After a Danger touchdown rush, receiver Lemans Casimier took a kick return to mid field and the Barnstormers were able to capitalize on the good field position with quarterback Brion Carnes scampering into the end zone from five yards out, 13-7. Nebraska’s next possession ended in a missed field goal. The Barnstormers followed up the miss with Carnes finding receiver Bryan Pray for their fourth touchdown the last two weeks, 14-13. Nebraska kicker Brendan Hanaphy redeemed himself on their next possession nailing an 18 yard field goal to retake the lead, 16-14. After marching down the field with 30 seconds left in the half Carnes found Pray for the second time this game to take the lead into halftime, 20-16.
The Danger posted the only score of the third quarter after a flurry of penalties against the Barnstormers gave the Danger good field position. Danger quarterback Branden Crawford found his way into the end zone on the ground from four yards out, 23-20.
Both teams struggled to find their way on offense for the majority of the fourth quarter until the teams combined for four scores with under three minutes remaining. First the Barnstormers regained the lead when Carnes found Roland on a short pass that Roland turned into a catch and run 16 yard touchdown, kicker Josh Gable added the extra point, 27-23. On the ensuing kickoff, Danger defensive back Jabari Gorman turned a near Barnstormer rouge point into a 46 yard return to the Barnstormers’ five yard line; from there Danger quarterback Branden Crawford took the ball into the end zone for the second time, 30-27. On their next possession after tearing down the field receiver Brady Roland made a one handed catch off of a defender in the back of the end zone to give the Barnstormers a 34-30 lead with fifty seconds remaining in the game. The following Danger drive ended when Barnstormer defensive lineman Ra’Shawde Myers sacked Danger quarterback Branden Crawford on fourth down. The Barnstormers added a field goal from kicker Josh Gable while attempting to run the clock out on fourth down with 9 seconds remain. An interception by Barnstormers’ defensive back Derrick Morgan closed out the game and the Barnstormers walked out of Grand Island with the victory, 37-30.
The Barnstormers (4-5) are back home next week as they get set to face the Colorado Crush at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. Kickoff for that game is set for 7:05 p.m. CDT.
