Des Moines, Iowa – The Iowa Barnstormers dropped a 48-42 decision to the top-ranked Spokane Shock on Friday night before 9,164 rocking fans at Wellmark Field on Friday night. The Barnstormers fall to 6-8 on the season, putting their playoff hopes in serious jeopardy. Meanwhile the Shock won their tenth straight game, improving their record to 12-2, including a 7-0 mark on the road.
Spokane jumped out to a decisive 27-7 first half lead as Quarterback Kyle Rowley was outstanding. However a strange decision to attempt an onside kick with just under one minute remaining in the second quarter backfired on the Shock as an alert Rodney Filer scooped up the ball and returned it 11 yards for a Barnstormer touchdown. Iowa stopped Spokane on downs on the ensuing possession and then quarterback Ryan Vena connected with Jesse Schmidt for a 13 yard touchdown on the half’s final play to narrow the lead to 27-21.
Iowa received the ball first in the second half and wasted no time in gaining their first and only lead of the night 28-27, as Vena once again found Schmidt in the end zone, this time from 38 yards out. Spokane responded with touchdown drives on their next two possessions, giving them a 41-28 lead after three quarters. The Barnstormers cut the lead to just 6 points twice in the fourth quarter, but Spokane was able to run out the clock during the final minutes to preserve the victory.
Next up for the Barnstormers is their final home game of the year when they face the Milwaukee Iron next Saturday, July 24 at 7:05pm.
