Des Moines, Iowa – The Iowa Barnstormers used a frantic second half rally in order to secure their first victory of the season, 43-42 over the defending AFL champion Spokane Shock before 10,552 fans at Wellmark Field in Des Moines, IA on Friday night. Defensive back Cameron McGlenn preserved the victory with his second interception of Spokane Quarterback Kyle Rowley with just 14 seconds left in regulation time. With the victory, Iowa improves to 1-1 on the season, while Spokane Falls to 0-3.
Spokane dominated much of the first half as Rowley threw for four touchdowns, three to wide receiver Greg Orton. The Shock took a 28-18 lead into the break but Iowa responded with a 19 point third quarter consisting of three Brad Banks touchdown passes. All three touchdowns came off of Spokane turnovers, forced by an aggressive Iowa defense, giving the Barnstormers a 37-35 lead after three quarters.
The shock narrowed Iowa’s lead to just a point in the fourth quarter and were drving toward a certain victory, before being foiled by McGlenn at the goal line. Banks finished the game completing 20 of 32 passes for 232 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also rushed for a 22 yard score in the first quarter.
Barnstormers wide receiver Jesse Schmidt caught a game high 11 passes for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Barnstormers now hit the road for two games at San Jose (April 1) and Kansas City (April 9).
