SPEED DATING: Meet the Barnstormers
Defensive Back Matt Goldsmith

Welcome back to SPEED DATING, where we give you a crash course introduction to each member of the 2017 Iowa Barnstormers roster!

Today we’re going to introduce you to defensive back Matt Goldsmith.

Goldsmith (6-1, 200, Illinois State) returns to the Iowa Barnstormers for his second season with the team. The four-year letter winner for the Illinois State Redbirds joined the Barnstormers for his rookie Indoor Football League (IFL) season in 2015. Goldsmith was a break out defensive star collecting 51.5 total tackles, 7 pass breakups, and four interceptions in 14 games. Goldsmith signed a free-agent contract with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League (CFL) where he spent the 2016 season.

What did Goldsmith miss about playing with the Barnstormers? The fans, of course! “The thing I missed the most would have to be the fans and the environment in Des Moines, there’s just so much love in that city,” said Goldsmith. “The Barnstormers hands down have the most loyal fans and I missed the comradery between the fans and players.”

We asked Goldsmith a few quick questions to get to know him better, check it out below:

What’s your sign? Scorpio

What is something that’s on your bucket list? “To travel to every state and big city in the U.S.”

Who is someone who inspires you? “My mother inspires more than anyone else because of everything she sacrificed over the years to make sure me and my sister were able to be in an environment conducive for success. My Mom is one of the strongest ladies I've ever known and her strength mentally, physically, and emotionally wears off on me and helps me in football and in life and I owe her the world.”

Where is one place you have always wanted to visit, but haven’t? “California. I’ve always wanted to go to LA and San Fra, but I will go sooner or later.”

What is your favorite thing about playing football? “My favorite thing would have to be game day, there’s nothing like the feeling of coming out on the field on game day and going to battle with your brothers for one common goal.”

If you weren’t playing football, what would you be doing? “Honestly, I can’t even imagine doing anything other than playing or coaching football. Football is my life and my gift from God.”

What is your favorite restaurant in Des Moines? “My favorite restaurant would have to be hands down Montana Mike’s.”

What would you say is your biggest accomplishment in life thus far? “My greatest achievement in life would have to be being the first male in my family to ever graduate from college. That was huge for me to go to college and get a degree because it breaks a cycle in my family while also starting a new cycle for my sons and the men in my family following after me. I’m thankful because playing football gave me that opportunity and I was able to go free of cost on full scholarship.”

What are you looking forward to in returning to the Barnstormers? “I’m looking forward to a big season for the team. When I was here in Iowa in 2015, we were right on the brink of turning into a playoff team. I’m just anxious to help bring a winning season to Des Moines.”

What is something you want the fans to know about you? “That I’m a guy that has been through a lot in my lifetime and I can truly say it has only made me stronger and it has me itching for more success. A winning season is coming to Des Moines!”

What is your goal going into the 2017 season? “My goal coming into the season is nothing short of a championship!”
