Barnstormers Lose in Overtime
DES MOINES, IA- The Iowa Barnstormers (4-8) fell to the Sioux Falls Storm (12-1) at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA Friday night, 50-49.
A close game ending in overtime between Sioux Falls Storm and the Iowa Barnstormers started with a bang. Iowa was the first to strike with just ten seconds gone in the first quarter when receiver Lemans Casimier took a handoff from new quarterback Travis Partridge three yards in for the score, a PAT made it 7-0. The Storm wouldn’t waste any time putting up a score of their own when returner Korey Williams took the following kickoff 52 yards for the score a PAT tied the game, 7-7. Iowa struck again with eight minutes remaining as Partridge threw his first touchdown as a Barnstormer to receiver Brady Roland for the nine yard score, PAT was blocked, 13-7. The back and forth continued when Sioux Falls running back Brandon Johnson took a handoff seven yards for the score, PAT good 14-13.
The defending champs began to flex their muscle but were unable to build a substantial lead in the second quarter starting after a missed Iowa field goal. Sioux Falls receiver Mike Tatum was able scamper into the end zone for a one yard touchdown run, PAT good, 21-13. The Storm extended their lead further with two minutes remaining in the half when Williams found the end zone on a rush from five yards out a made extra point put the Storm up 28-13. The Barnstormers comeback would start with just 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter when receiver Johnny Thomas was able to hold onto a pass from Partridge while getting hit in the back of the end zone, the PAT was blocked for a second time making it 28-19 to end the half.
The Barnstormers regained possession of the ball when defensive back Derrick Morgan intercepted a pass in the end zone and returning it all the way out to the Storm 15 yard line. The Barnstormers soon scored when Partridge found the end zone again, this time with his legs from two yards out, PAT good, 28-26. The following Storm possession ended when linebacker Javicz Jones intercepted a pass that safety Mister Alexander leapt high and tipped a pass headed toward the end zone. The Barnstormers took their first lead since late in the first quarter as Partridge followed up the interception by floating a pass 45 yards into the hands of Bryan Pray for the score, 2pt. conversion was successful 34-28 Barnstormers. The Barnstormers put three more points on the board when kicker Jimmy Allen split the uprights on a 25 yard field goal attempt with under a minute left in the third quarter, 37-28. The Storm were able to pull within two points with no time remaining in the third when quarterback Lorenzo Brown found receiver Caleb Holley on a 25 yard pass, PAT good, 37-35.
The Barnstormers built on their slim lead when Partridge threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game and his second to Roland a failed 2pt. made it 43-35. The next score in regulation came with 50 seconds remaining when Storm receiver took a handoff seven yards for the score, the successful 2pt conversion knotted it at 43-43. Regulation ended with missed game winning field goals by both teams. The Barnstormers won the overtime coin toss and elected to defend first. The Storm were able to score when quarterback Lorenzo Brown scrambled into the end zone from 12 yards out, PAT good, 50-43. The Barnstormers were able to find the end zone on their possession when Partridge found Pray for their second touchdown of the night leaving a 2pt conversion to win and a PAT to send it into a second overtime. The Barnstormers elected to go for two and Partridge’s pass intended for receiver Johnny Thomas was tipped out of bounds ending the game, 50-49.
