Barnstormers Defeat Axemen 38-26

Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Barnstormers (1-1) record their first win of 2015 in a road game versus the Bemidji Axemen (0-2) Monday night at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minnesota.

The Bemidji home team started off with the first possession of the night. The Iowa Barnstormers defense made scoring difficult with a pass break up by Iowa DB Javicz Jones. Working their way down the field, Bemidji QB EJ White connected with WR Ryan Balentine for the first touchdown of the night, 0-7. The Barnstormers took their turn with the lead of QB Robbie Nallenweg. After entering the red zone, the Iowa team failed to convert. At the finish of the first, Iowa Barnstormers 0, Bemidji Axemen 7.

The second started off with quick points for each team. The Axemen put six on the board and set for the extra point. A blocked kick by DL Sean Daniels was snagged by DB Kirkland Davidson and returned for a defensive PAT, 2-13. With momentum high for the Barnstormers, Nallenweg launched one deep for a 42-yard touchdown to WR Brady Roland, 8-13. The Axemen lost their turn to score with an interception by DB Torez Jones. However, the opportunity was missed due to a Barnstormers fumble. Before the end of the half, both teams put another seven on the board. Iowa Barnstormers 15, Bemidji Axemen 20.

Coming out of the locker room, the Barnstormers took no time in taking control of the game. Another long touchdown pass from Nallenweg to Roland increased Iowa’s score 21-20. The remainder of the quarter went scoreless and left the Barnstormers in the lead. Iowa Barnstormers 21, Bemidji Axemen 20.

The fourth began with an exchange of interceptions. For his third touchdown of the night, Iowa’s Roland snagged the ball in the air, 28-20. Throughout the remainder of the quarter, the Iowa defense held Bemidji to only six points and tallied two more interceptions. A pair of Barnstormers touchdowns increased the margin even further. A complete 30-yard field goal by K Josh Gable and fumble recovery by DL Jeremy Stephens wrapped up the matchup. Iowa Barnstormers 38, Bemidji Axemen 26.

Nallenweg completed the night 20-32 with 196 yards and five touchdowns. Leading the receiving team, Roland tallied five receptions for 105 yards and three touchdowns. Daniels and T. Jones led the defense with eight total tackles each.
