Barnstormers Announce 2019 Coaching Staff
DES MOINES – The Iowa Barnstormers have announced details about their 2019 coaching staff. Joining Coach Wooten this season will be Chuck Miller, Marshall Hart, and Jason Simpson.
Head Coach Dixie Wooten is returning to the Barnstormers for his third season with the team. With over a dozen years of combined playing and coaching experience, Wooten took over as Head Coach for the Barnstormers in 2017. Last season, Coach Wooten led the Barnstormers to a United Bowl Championship victory, the team’s first ever Championship title, and earned honors as the IFL’s Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
“This year I have a new coaching staff, but there won’t be any changes,” said Coach Wooten. “We have the same goal going into the New Year: get the championship or it’s a wasted season. The men joining our coaching staff are three men with high football IQs who understand how to motivate players to be successful. They also bring a chip on their shoulders because they all have something to prove in one way or another.”
Chuck Miller will be joining the Barnstormers organization as the Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach. Miller has an extensive coaching background in both professional and high school football. No stranger to the indoor game, Miller spent the past 3 seasons on the Green Bay Blizzard’s coaching staff as the Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator. Miller’s coaching resume also includes a stint with the Chicago Eagles of the CIF and the Brisbane Outlaws of the National Gridiron League in Australia.
“Chuck brings a different outlook to the defense,” said Coach Wooten. “He understands both sides of the ball and being a former offensive lineman, he can see the different ways the offensive line will try to attack our defense. He’s excited to be an Iowa Barnstormer, coach a new scheme, and take on a new season and that energy is infectious.”
Marshall Hart joins the Iowa Barnstormers as the Offensive Line and Special Teams Coach. Hart also brings an extensive coaching background to the position. Last season, Hart was part of the Nebraska Danger coaching staff and prior to that he spent two seasons coaching the Offensive Line with the Spokane Empire. During his time with the Empire, Hart’s offensive lines were in the top four of the IFL. Hart also has experience coaching high school athletes, having spent five seasons coaching high school football at Northwest Christian High School in Colbert, Washington.
“Marshall brings a great understanding of the offensive line play,” said Coach Wooten “He brings knowledge and hard work that will make the offensive line group successful. His experience is a big factor on the o-line having coached two talented groups in Spokane and Nebraska. I look forward to seeing him coach day to day drills and watch them work on game day.”
Jason Simpson is returning to the Iowa Barnstormers coaching staff as the Defensive Backs coach. Simpson brings over a dozen years of combined playing and coaching experience to the team. Simpson is familiar with the team’s tradition and goals both on and off the field having spent six seasons as a player at defensive back before joining the coaching staff for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. As a player, Simpson has earned several honors and also currently holds Barnstormers records in categories of single-season interceptions (10), single-season combined kick return yards (1,723), and single-season kick return yards (1,711).
“I am looking for great things out of Jason,” said Coach Wooten. “He is Barnstormer to the core and I am excited that he accepted my offer to come back. His focus and dedication is second to none. As a player, Jason played at a high-level and was incredibly physical. I look forward to the knowledge and technique he will bring to our defensive backs, he’ll have those guys flying around.”
Coach Wooten is excited to have a new group of coaches working alongside him following the championship season and touched on the importance of having a cohesive coaching unit.
“Chemistry between coaches is very important and all of us are building that right now. We have to believe in each other’s work ethic, put our all into the process, and build a brotherhood. It’s all about understanding that we are here for one common goal and that’s winning a championship.”
