Making the Team: From Tryout to Playoffs
DB Bryce Enyard Recaps His Open Tryout Experience
DES MOINES – Dozens of athletes filed in to the Pella Fieldhouse on an early November morning in 2016 for the opportunity to earn a spot on the Iowa Barnstormers roster. Among those athletes was defensive back Bryce Enyard.
Enyard was coming off of an impressive collegiate career with the Northwest Missouri Bearcats, where he spent four seasons. In his senior season alone, Enyard collected 50 tackles, seven pass breakups, four interceptions, two touchdowns, and one sack earning First Team All-MIAA and CCA All-Region Second Team Honors. He was attending the open tryout with the hopes of getting his foot in the door and kick starting his professional football career.
“My tryout experience was a little bittersweet for me,” said Enyard. “I felt that I should have already been signed or playing in another league. My agent brought the idea up to me and I really had no other choice because I wasn’t playing football and I still wanted to play.”
Enyard noted that although he was nervous going into the tryout, he knew it was an opportunity to showcase his talent and athleticism. “I knew that if I didn’t do well, then I wouldn’t be taken. Just like a job interview. If you don’t do well in that, do you think they will hire you?”
Enyard arrived at the Barnstormers open tryout with one goal in mind. “My goal was simple, it was to show the coach that I can play football and that I am fast enough for the professional level.” He accomplished just that, catching the attention of Head Coach Dixie Wooten.
Following the tryout, Enyard was offered a contract earning a place on the Iowa Barnstormers 2017 roster and an invitation to Training Camp. “It was a great feeling,” said Enyard. “Not many can say that they started their journey into a professional sport from a tryout.”
Enyard and the Barnstormers had a successful year, finishing the 2017 regular season 13-3 and making it to the playoffs.
On November 4, 2017 dozens of more tryout hopefuls will file into the Pella Fieldhouse as the Barnstormers host their Annual Open Tryout in preparation for the 2018 season. Enyard has advice for those who plan to attend.
“Take this tryout like a job interview.”
To prepare for the tryout, Enyard suggests that participants simply be themselves. “Just be you. Coaches will know if you are able to play. I will say, catch the coaches eyes fast. Warm up like you are ready for a game and run a fast 40.”
Enyard’s final thoughts for this year’s participants: “You have something to prove. I’ve been there, earned my contract, earned a spot on the team, and started for a well-respected Barnstormers team. Now it’s your turn to earn your spot.”
The Iowa Barnstormers 2018 Open Tryout will take place on Saturday, November 4 at the Pella Fieldhouse. The Tryout is open to athletes ages 18 and older who are non-college eligible and interested in playing professional indoor football. Pre-registration is now open.
